 Luke Chavis

2018-19 McColl Elementary Middle School Top Speller

Fifteen spellers in grades 5-8 competed in the McColl School Spelling Bee on December 5th.  Fifth grade spellers were Eli Troublefield, Lisa Alford, Makayla Drake, and Samuel Jacobs.  Sixth grade spellers were Jackson Godbold, Xavier Martin, and Luke Chavis.  Kaileigh Ashworth, Devon McCrimmon, Kaylee Alford, and Kysean Wright represented seventh grade.  Eighth grade spellers were Gabriel Ovino, Caleb Bullard, Kenyjhai Monroe, and Madison Woodle.

Before the spelling bee began Luke Chavis asked, “What are you going to do if we spell all the words?”  That sounds like confidence.  After thirty-eight rounds, Luke Chavis, was named Top Speller at McColl School and Top Sixth Grade Speller.  This is the second year in a row that Luke has earned this school title. Last year Luke also brought home the District Spelling Bee Champion title. Kaileigh Ashworth, another previous school winner, was runner-up and Top Seventh Grade Speller.  Lisa Alford was named Top Fifth Grade Speller, and Gabriel Ovino was the Top Eighth Grade Speller.  Each of these students overcame the jitters and represented their respective grade levels proudly.

We take spelling pretty seriously in McColl, so we cannot wait to find out which of these young people will win the District Spelling Bee.  Watch out Marlboro County Spellers! Bring Home the regional trophy, Luke!  We are cheering you toward victory!
